EDITOR IN CHIEF

Job Description

Westminster, London
Few Editor in Chiefs can say with complete honesty that their words keep people safer. But in this role, you'll oversee reports that increase protection for children and domestic abuse victims, deliver justice for victims of crime, and improve our policing and fire and rescue services.
Focus on positive change
HMICFRS provides authoritative information that helps the public assess the performance of their police force and fire and rescue service. We ask the questions citizens would ask, use our expertise to interpret the evidence, and publish the answers and our recommendations in plain English.
Recent reports have focused on fraud, child protection, domestic abuse and the police response to people with mental health problems. Our fire and rescue inspections also highlighted a lack of diversity, cultural problems and out-of-date working practices.
As Editor in Chief, you'll make sure these inspection reports and other written materials are not only clear and well structured - but persuasive, so services take our advice to heart.
Quality copy
Practically speaking, we'll expect you to be the vocal and visible champion of readable, logical and precise language. The inspirational figure who leads our language programmes, assesses reports, recruits and coach authors, and creatively inspires everyone to follow the guidelines.
You'll work with our publications team to enhance operations too. And there'll also be the opportunity to lead the development of our annual State of Policing and State of Fire and Rescue reports - closely collaborating with Her Majesty's Chief Inspector, Sir Thomas Winsor.
A proven expert
A highly-respected senior writer, editor or journalist; you'll be known for your clear thinking, crisp analysis, and ability to write with clarity, rhythm, simplicity and elegance.
Furthermore, you'll have experience of advocating for that same tone in people of all levels - as a leader, through training sessions, and in your day-to-day work.
Knowledge of policing, criminal justice or fire and rescue would help, but isn't essential. It's your writing that will set you apart.
There are more details on the role and the application process on our website.
Equal opportunities
We offer a guaranteed interview scheme for anyone with a disability as defined in the Equality Act 2010, if they meet the minimum criteria for the post.
We encourage a diverse workforce and aim to provide a working environment where all staff at all levels are valued and respected, and where discrimination, bullying, promotion of negative stereotyping and harassment are not tolerated.
We will not discriminate on the grounds of gender, gender identity, race, disability, sexual orientation, religion or belief, age, caring responsibilities, part-time working or any other factor irrelevant to a person's work.
We are committed to giving all staff opportunities to maximise their skills and achieve their potential.
