This role offers exciting challenges and rewards for a charismatic individual to work in our busy visitor centre on this fantastic cliff-top reserve.

Community Engagement Officer
Reference: APR
Location: Mull of Galloway
Salary: £22,986.00 - £25,500.00 Per Annum
Benefits: Pension, Life Assurance, 26 days Annual Leave
Duration: 6 months

The purpose of this role is to promote and interpret the reserve, its wildlife and landscapes to visitors. To manage the RSPB Mull of Galloway Visitor Centre, developing strong local contacts with the community and local businesses. To develop a programme of events through the season. To recruit members to the RSPB to meet an agreed target.

Responsibilities of the role:

To deliver the best visitor experience for visitors to the Mull of Galloway. To interpret and promote the site, its wildlife and landscapes to c40,000 visitors during the summer period
To work with roving membership recruiters to deliver reserve membership target.
To supervise local community volunteers and recruit new volunteers to support the work of RSPB and the reserve (including fundraising).
To maintain a close working relationship with the Mull of Galloway Trust, community groups, Gallie Craig cafe, other local businesses, fishermen and other partners.
Work with regional public affairs team to promote the work of the RSPB by means of press releases, newsletters, articles, reserve literature, leaflet production and distribution, promotional flier distribution.
Develop contacts with, and encourage, school & youth group visits. (This role involves working with children/management of those who work with children and requires the job holder to be registered in the PVG scheme. The activities carried out involve occasional contact with children in a teaching/supervisory role).
To develop a series of summer events to enhance understanding and interpretation of the site. Give evening talks in local caravan parks and at Drummore village. Provide guided walks on site and locally. To ensure a clear plan for membership recruitment and community fundraising is incorporated into all event activity.
Monitor breeding bird numbers, migrants and general biological records.
Assist the reserve site manager to undertake routine site management and maintain the site and centre in a clean and tidy condition.
Monitor visitor numbers
Carry out any necessary banking and maintain record of account
Write an annual report of activities on the reserve

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

Good basic knowledge of UK wildlife, habitats and key species (sufficient to be able to lead public engagement activities in a credible way and to train and motivate volunteers).
Computer literacy – Microsoft Office.
Interpersonal skills.
Ability to engage with a wide range of people face to face.
Skills in events and project management.
Customer care.
Volunteer recruitment and support.
An excellent verbal communicator able to communicate RSPB messages in a way that is understood by a range of audiences and that engenders their support.
Strong written skills.
Ability to work under own initiative.
Ability to enthuse and motivate themselves and others.
Ability to drive/access remote locations.

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:

Knowledge of health and safety procedures.
Experience in community engagement - working with the public and delivering events to the public.
Experience in membership recruitment or involved with charitable fundraising via face-to-face methods.
Experience in partnership working
