TrustLaw is the global pro bono service of the Thomson Reuters Foundation. As the world's leading pro bono legal service, TrustLaw helps high-impact NGOs and social enterprises, to grow, streamline their operations and navigate complex laws and regulations by connecting them with free legal assistance from the best law firms and corporate legal teams around the world. We also deliver groundbreaking legal research on key social and policy issues that our members use to support their advocacy and law reform efforts, and we deliver innovative capacity-building workshops on legal issues across the globe.

About the role

The Responsible Business Senior Manager will sit within our Inclusive Economies Programmes team, a dynamic and growing team within the Foundation. We are looking for someone to drive and grow our fair and sustainable business model portfolio and continue to grow our expertise, engagement, and thought leadership in the area of responsible business.

We are looking for somebody entrepreneurial and strategic who has a passion for responsible business and its impact on society. You will actively contribute to growing and developing the Foundation's programmatic activities on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) with a focus on social issues, Just Transition and social innovation, exploring effective ways in which the Foundation can deploy its services to actively contribute to strengthening fair and sustainable business models.

You will be a subject matter specialist and partnership builder that can help us grow our activities and thought leadership in this area. You will be adept at managing projects and activities, with a passion for events and the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.

Your responsibilities


  • Be the key resource on responsible business practices across the Foundation, providing topic-specific input in project proposals, scoping and designing projects to ensure quality and impact are delivered on responsible business issues.
  • Work closely with other TRF teams (including Programmes, Media Freedom and TrustLaw) to identify and develop strategic interventions that leverage the power of convenings, the law and the media to address issues such as strengthening the S in ESG, Just Transition and social innovation.
  • Design and deliver strategic convenings on responsible business with a diverse range of stakeholders to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and best practice (see example of strategic convenings: ESG Working Group or Banks Alliance ).
  • Develop strategic partnerships, both locally and globally and coordinate across teams (especially with the Business Development team) to ensure engagement.
  • Coordinate the Foundation's participation in key sector events and develop briefings for speakers.
  • Stay up to date on companies' efforts to tackle modern slavery/ forced labor; diversity and inclusion, climate and inequality to engage them in discussion on best practices and ensuring that impact and change is delivered.

Project Specific

  • Leverage the work of the ESG Working Group and the S in ESG paper to continue pushing the financial and corporate sectors to strengthen the indicators for the S in ESG and to adopt more broadly the measurement of S issues such as, labor and land Rights, inequality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Input expertise and build relationships to develop strong alliances to end forced labor and strengthening the S in ESG in Malaysia, Thailand, India and Colombia.
  • Manage the Stop Slavery Award for 2022 from recruitment of applications, to shortlisting to delivering the content of the event. Help scope, re-design and develop Stop Slavery Award 2023 edition.
  • Deliver convenings to gather multi-stakeholder groups in Brazil, Bangladesh and India to strengthen the efforts locally in tackling climate change and inequality.

About you

We are looking for a strategic, dynamic, and knowledgeable individual with proven experience in the following areas:

  • In depth knowledge of fair and sustainable business models, responsible business and business and human rights (modern slavery, labor rights and climate).
  • Extensive experience in scoping and developing opportunities and partnerships with the private sector, engaging them in multi-stakeholder convenings around best practices to implement change.
  • Experience in ESG with a focus on social issues.
  • Experience in engagement and relationship management of organisations and businesses.
  • Experience with programme design and implementation in business and human rights.
  • Experience in managing convenings, workshops and roundtables, as well as coalition building and partnership development especially with the private sector.
  • Project management and financial management skills, including the ability to prioritise and deliver results on time and on budget.
  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills and confidence to liaise with partners at all levels of seniority.
  • Established networks with relevant stakeholders and key sector players especially in the private sector.
  • Experience in working independently and as part of a globally diverse and distributed team.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including report writing, brief writing and editing skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.


  • Legal background or policy experience related to business and human rights.
  • Familiarity with international development issues such as Just Transition, diversity and inclusion, inclusive growth and inequality.
  • Spanish speaker.
