Communications Manager Reports to: Head of Communications and Marketing Salary: £33,000 – £38,000 per annumLocation: Remote working and main office in London, Aldwych Hours: 37.5 hours per week (flexible) Contract: Permanent The Charity Founded in 2015, Breaking Barriers is a fast-paced, start-up charity with a mission to help refugees gain the knowledge, confidence and experience to secure stable and fulfilling employment in their new home. We offer effective and flexible employment support in direct partnership with businesses that help refugees secure work, progress into better jobs, and successfully integrate into UK society. We have a unique approach, working with corporate partners to help refugees develop careers that match their skills, experience, and aspirations. Since Breaking Barriers’ inception, we have grown to support in excess of 500 refugees per year and have ambitious plans to expand this as part of our strategic plan. We concentrate on getting things done in a flexible environment where everyone is encouraged to take ownership and contribute. We are a team of around 40 staff supported by several hundred volunteers, who are all committed to helping the refugee community. These include proactive and reactive press and PR, organic social media, internal and stakeholder communications and stories and content creation. The role holder will be responsible for building on the reach and reputation of Breaking Barriers with a focus on our key audience targets.Working with all teams in the organisation across programme delivery, fundraising, data and impact, as well as taking a leading role in the delivery of our thought-leadership strategy, the successful candidate will be a collaborative and creative manager, able to drive projects forward and bring people together to meet our ambitious communications objectives. Key Responsibilities The communications and media manager plans and delivers communications to key groups, such as clients, corporate partners, funders and supporters, volunteers, target public audiences and journalists. Working closely with the Head of Communications and Marketing, the post holder will be an excellent writer and editor and will write, edit, coordinate, and publish content across various channels, including the website, social media, and within printed and online marketing materials. The role will manage the PR and Digital Comms Assistant and support and manage key projects such as Breaking Barriers website and brand re-development. Press and social media Increase the organisation’s profile across press and social media, and with influencers and press organisations Write press releases, articles, statements, and social media copyRespond to requests from the press for comments, views and supporting information and maximise opportunities for further engagement on relevant topics Develop relationships with target media representatives Provide support to PR consultant activities as required Act as a spokesperson when necessary Stories and stakeholder managementOversee the management of a stories database, actively collating stories and images, gaining relevant permissions and ensuring GDPR compliance.Act as a key relationship manager for clients who are active storytellers.Digital content, copywriting and websiteProject manage the website redevelopment project, with a particular focus on content audits and creation.Lead on copywriting and production of client-facing materials and key publications e.g. Annual Review and Impact Report Write creative briefs and produce content as required for external and internal audiences, dealing sensitively with those whose personal experiences might be featured, and liaising with external freelancers.Provide communications support for fundraising campaigns as required Help market and run forthcoming events both online and in-personInternal CommsTake responsibility for devising regular and consistent internal communications to all staff across existing platforms; MS Teams, email and zoom.Support SLT with ad-hoc leadership cascades Brand Ensure consistent Breaking Barriers branding is used across all channelsSupport the Head of Communications and Marketing with the development and implementation of Breaking Barriers brand refreshHelp maintain and build Breaking Barriers reputation across its communicationsAct as a brand champion internally championing our values Other Line manage the PR and Digital Comms Officer Participate in cross-functional projects as required Manage any volunteers and interns as required Manage relationships with freelance creatives and consultants as required Person Specification Essential Excellent verbal and written English communication skills. Strong knowledge, experience, and expertise in a press, PR or communications environmentStrong understanding of social media management and strategyConfidence in communicating complex messaging and translating it into a key messaging that meets audience needs. Demonstrable expertise in copywriting for marketing and communications materials Excellent project and time management skills, with an ability to apply a high level of attention to detail to all work streams. A keen ability to build strong working relationships with journalists, clients and other stakeholders.A proactive attitude, an ability to work under their own initiative, and effectively time manage a varied workload. A demonstrable interest and commitment to working with marginalised populations.
