Partnerships Lead

Job Description

Where in Wellcome will I be working?

Wellcome Collection has begun a programme of initiatives that aim to confront the colonial power structures and prejudices inherent in our collections. We want to put the voices and perspectives of individuals and communities for whom the collections have direct significance at the heart of that programme. To do this we will form a series of collaborative and participatory research partnerships and build a new gallery for our collections on the foundations of their work. As Collections Gallery Partnerships Lead you will be part of the New Collections Gallery team.

The objects, images and archives in our care are rich in human stories about life and health, but many of these have been hidden or suppressed by previous interpretations. The programme of collaborative research aims to form partnerships with those whose stories and experiences have been ignored by previous histories of health and medicine, and to bring to our collections new ways to understand health and human experience.

During the 4-year build-up to the new Collections Gallery, a series of public-facing activities, will both reflect and inform the research programme as it develops, allowing it to be transparent and participatory where appropriate.

What will I be doing?

You will work with us and our research partners to address the colonial power structures inherent in our collections.

As Collections Gallery Partnerships Lead, you will coordinate a programme of collaborative research which aligns with Wellcome Collection's Research Development Programme and informs the development of the New Collections Gallery.

You will work alongside the Research Development and Inclusive Collections teams and (when relevant) colleagues from the Science Museum, to develop and sustain research partnerships that bring new perspectives and new ways of understanding our core collections.

You will reach beyond the academic world to engage with communities whose interests are reflected in our collections.

You will help our research partners devise short-term experiments in our current collections exhibition spaces and beyond, which will engage our audiences and inform the content of the New Collections Gallery.

Is this job for me?

We are looking for someone who is committed to confronting the legacies of colonialism and the ways in which they inform the health challenges of today - someone who will enjoy building and maintaining productive and lasting relationships with the individuals and communities of interest with whom we work.

It is essential that you have the following:

  • Experience of building sustainable partnerships with people with lived experience of disability or specific health conditions, and / or with source or diaspora communities
  • Proven working knowledge of the practical and ethical complexities associated with participatory research
  • A working knowledge of the wider research ecosystem
  • Experience of programme evaluation and of embedding learning into future practice
  • Practical experience in a relevant environment
