BBC Worldwide Limited is the main commercial arm and a wholly owned subsidiary of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). BBC Worldwide exists to support the BBC public service mission and to maximise profits on its behalf. It does this through investing in, commercialising and showcasing content from the BBC around the world, in a way that is consistent with BBC standards and values. The business also builds the reach and reputation of the BBC brand overseas and champions British creativity. In 2013/14, BBC Worldwide generated headline profits of £157.4m and headline sales of £1,042.3m and returned £173.8m to the BBC.
At BBC Worldwide, we build the BBC's brands, audiences and reputation across the world while championing the wider UK creative industries. We're passionate about content. We invest in it, commercialise it and create it. This means we each get to play our part in making history.
The BBC was born in the UK - and the UK is at the heart of BBC Worldwide. Its diverse activities to grow the BBC brand and drive business opportunities include providing digital downloads, branded products and turning much-loved brands into live events.
From Television Centre in London, we run a finely tuned retail and licensing operation, providing everything from digital downloads of unmissable programmes to branded merchandise. We create and then meet a growing appetite for DVDs, music, books and other products featuring inspirational characters, legendary series and much-loved brands.
We’ve expanded in digital, launching BBC Store, which offers audiences almost 9000 hours of viewing, making it the largest collection of BBC programmes available to own. Our DVD and download businesses enjoy widespread distribution thanks to a steady stream of BBC hits including Peter Kay’s Car Share, War and Peace and Doctor Foster. We’ve also worked with YouTube stars Joe and Caspar to release their first DVD. At launch, Joe & Caspar Hit the Road achieved the biggest day one pre-orders for any title on amazon.co.uk in 2015.
We deliver global best-in-class partnerships that enable fans to engage with our brands, and we have a deal with Penguin Random House to be the global publisher and distributor of BBC Audio content.
Our live events team takes key brands and turns them into events that thrill audiences in the UK and wider afield – we also have a partnership with events company SME to bring Countryfile live to audiences. We manage UKTV as a joint venture with Scripps Networks Interactive – a television/internet-visual extravaganza that keeps around 40 million viewers hooked each week.
We also manage a suite of 20 licensed magazines, all linked to the BBC brand – from the original listings guide, Radio Times, to programme-specific titles. Did you know that we’re the UK's fourth largest consumer magazine publisher?
There’s so much to get your teeth into at BBC Worldwide in London…
